This article was written by Dr. Aursulesei Ruxandra, pediatric neurologist specialist with extensive experience in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions. Pediatric neurology plays an important role in the periodic neurological evaluation of premature infants, as well as of all newborns at risk of developing neurological sequelae, with the goal of early detection and treatment of any impairment of the nervous system.
When do we suspect the onset of JME?
We suspect the onset of JME when the child notices that objects slip out of their hand (e.g., a comb), or even has unexplained falls. The contraction is bilateral, but can be asymmetric. These manifestations usually occur in the morning upon waking (within the first 30-60 minutes) and occur more frequently when nighttime sleep was insufficient, when the adolescent has previously consumed alcohol, or in states of high emotional impact (mental stress, emotions, frustration).
At what age can JME begin?
The onset is between ages 8-26.

What causes JME?
The cause of JME is genetic: the mutation is de novo or is transmitted within families in most cases (50-60% of cases).
What types of seizures occur in JME?
- Myoclonic
- Generalized tonic-clonic
- Typical absence seizures
Is JME a condition that will go away on its own, or will I have to follow treatment for life?
Treatment will need to be followed, in most cases, for life.
How is JME diagnosed?
The diagnosis is made clinically and paraclinically (EEG).
What can/can't I do if I've been diagnosed with JME?
The following should be in place:
- A regular sleep schedule
- Waking up gradually
- Avoiding bright light stimuli - wearing sunglasses
I should avoid:
- Drinking tea or coffee in the evening
- Alcoholic beverages in large amounts, frequently
- Depriving myself of sleep
- Consuming coffee, cola drinks, energy drinks in large amounts
- Doing sports that involve a risk of injury (climbing, mountaineering, diving); swimming can be practiced, but not unaccompanied.
