Hydrarthrosis, a condition also known as water on the knee, is caused by an accumulation of fluid inside or around the knee joint. The most common causes are injury to the knee ligaments and cartilage, infections, or arthritis. A small amount of fluid is normally present in joints. However, in some cases - for example in rheumatoid arthritis - excess fluid can accumulate, and the knee swells. Statistics suggest that 27% of people experience water on the knee at some point.

  • Pain characteristics: Hydrarthrosis can cause joint pain that is often described as aching or throbbing, and the pain may worsen with movement. Other knee conditions may have different types of pain, such as sharp pain during certain movements or positions.
  • Appearance of the knee: Hydrarthrosis usually causes visible swelling of the knee, but not always.
