Physical therapy after neurosurgical intervention

Neurosurgery can affect your control over your entire body's mobility. Loss of balance or sensitivity, decreased muscle tone with locomotor damage, loss of strength, and decreased endurance can change your lifestyle, even daily activities.
Physical therapy proposes the examination and treatment of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions that affect your ability to move and function in today's society. With the help of physical therapy, you can learn how to improve your physical abilities and discover new exercises to reduce your stress level, relieve your pain and prevent possible injuries.

How can physical therapy help you?

After a neurosurgical intervention, any recovery program begins with a consultation given by Dr. Savulescu, materialized in a diagnosis and a recovery therapy program, modeled on the specifics of each patient and each type of condition, to get the best possible result in each case.
Our experience comes from an activity of over 5 years and totals over 5000 patients treated by our specialists. Each patient is carefully examined, both by the attending physician and by physical therapists, both initially and during treatment, and the evolution is related to the recovery protocols implemented in our clinic.

A professional physiotherapist can identify your mobility conditions as a result of neurosurgical intervention. Depending on your situation, you can improve your physical abilities. If some of your conditions are permanent or severe, you can learn compensation techniques or how to use assistive devices. These techniques may include learning how to walk again, or how to walk differently with a crutch or orthosis. Stretching exercises or therapeutic massage can help you get rid of severe muscle pain, thus promoting movement. If you cannot move a part of your body, such as a hand or a leg, you will learn specific exercises that will improve your circulation, thus reducing local swelling.

The evaluation process

Your physiotherapist will assess your motor skills and recommend an exercise program to help you gradually increase to the maximum level of physical activity you can achieve. You should mention to him the specific problems you are facing and the reasons for your concern, as well as your goals and expectations. In the initial assessment, you will be subjected to a series of standardized tests to quantify your muscle tone, muscle strength, range of motion, and coordination.

A complete recovery program can take up to 8 weeks, but its duration depends on your specific needs. At the end of the recovery period, you will be re-evaluated to determine if the recovery program has helped you accomplish the goals you started at the beginning of the recovery process. You will also learn a series of exercises to perform at home and help you maintain the progress you have made.

Recovery exercises

You will receive a set of exercises that correspond to your needs and improve your mobility skills. Here are some of the exercises and therapies performed in our clinic:

  • Improving muscle strength: regaining muscle strength is an essential objective in the recovery process.
  • Restoring limb mobility: you will perform exercises to improve the range of motion. The goal is to improve the mobility of the affected limb and decrease pain, local swelling, and joint stiffness.
  • Compensation techniques: you will learn how to walk in a different way, or how to use a crutch or walking frame so that you can lead a normal and quiet life.
  • Improving the quality of life: these exercises will help you go on without any difficulties in your everyday activities.
It is very important to remember that each patient has their own parameters and needs. Together with your physical therapist, you will build a plan that suits your needs.
