Stretching

Medical information reviewed by: ,

Stretching

Stretching is a form of exercise in which a certain group of muscles or tendons are deliberately relaxed or contracted to improve elasticity and achieve better muscle tone. The result is a feeling of improved muscle control, flexibility and mobility. Stretching is also used for therapeutic purposes to treat muscle cramps. In its most basic form, stretching is a natural and instinctive activity. Improving mobility due to stretching is one of the pillars of fitness. Very often, athletes perform stretching exercises before and after training, to reduce the risk of injury, as well as to improve their performance.

Stretching can be dangerous when done incorrectly. There are several stretching techniques in general, but depending on which muscle group is stretched, some techniques can be ineffective or harmful; it can even lead to ruptures, hypermobility, instability, or permanent damage to tendons, ligaments, or muscle fibers.

Two types of stretching

Although there are many ways to perform stretching, they can be combined into two broad categories: static and dynamic.
The term static stretching refers to stretching exercises that are done without movement. In other words, the patient adopts the stretching position that he will maintain for a certain period. At the same time, dynamic stretching refers to stretching exercises that are performed with movement. In other words, the patient moves to increase his mobility and flexibility.

What are the benefits of stretching:

• increases flexibility
• improves alignment and facilitates postural awareness
• improves sports performance
• plays an important role in injury prevention, especially sports injuries
