Benign partial epilepsy (EPB)

What is benign partial epilepsy (BPE)?

It is a focal epilepsy of childhood, characterized by focal motor seizures and a particular EEG appearance, with a spontaneously remitting course. 

Can it be transmitted genetically?

Yes. 

At what age can BPE occur?

It usually begins between ages 2 and 14, but there have been cases with onset at age 1.

What do the seizures look like?

Most often, the seizures have a focal motor appearance without loss of consciousness  (in 50% of cases). They can also involve the muscles of the mouth, face or oropharynx, which causes drooling or the inability to speak. 20% of seizures become generalized.

How long does a seizure last?

It most often lasts 30-60 seconds. In younger children, it usually exceeds 2 minutes, even reaching the duration of status epilepticus.

When do the seizures occur?

Seizures most often occur during sleep or upon waking.

Will a child with BPE develop normally?

Yes, the prognosis is favorable. In exceptional cases, BPE has been observed in association with language disorders and minor visual and spatial disturbances.

Can it affect intellectual/academic development?

No. 

Will the seizures last a lifetime?

No, in 98% of cases they stop spontaneously by adulthood.
