Muscle Evaluation By Emg

Surface muscle evaluation using EMG

In the pediatric recovery department, we use the Chattanooga equipment, which helps us perform electromyography (EMG), a procedure to assess muscle function with two roles: diagnosis and post-traumatic recovery from fractures, sprains, dislocations.

EMG is a muscle electrostimulation procedure used to stimulate (by electrical impulses) the affected muscle groups. It can be used both in the treatment of 4-year-old children with orthopedic conditions and in performance athletes.

What does the EMG assessment tell us?

Electromyography (EMG) allows the evaluation of peripheral nerves and muscle activity, determines the differences in muscles between the limbs, and helps diagnose neuromuscular disorders. With the help of EMG, the electrical activity in the muscles is registered, the one generated spontaneously or following the muscular contraction. In combination with physical therapy, this procedure offers fast results in orthopedic pathology and post-traumatic recovery.

What does EMG assessment entail?

In the first stage of the procedure, the doctor applies small electrodes to the skin on the hand and foot and then applies a small electric shock to another area of the limb where the nerve stimuli are recorded.

In the second part, the doctor inserts a very thin needle into certain muscles to record the electrical activity of the muscle fibers. The needle is inserted into the relaxed muscle, to monitor the muscular activity at rest, and then into the tense muscle, to evaluate when contracted. The little one will not feel pain, but only a feeling of pressure - the needle has only the role of recording stimuli. He will perceive only a sensation of pressure because the needle has only the role of recording stimuli.

The impulses transmitted during the electromyography reach the tested muscle and cause a series of muscle contractions. These contractions are identical to the actual movement of the muscles during an exercise and aim to reach a threshold set in advance by the physiotherapist, depending on the objectives.

The threshold increases gradually, but also the intensity of the electrical impulse, to reach the complete recovery of the muscle.

The need for this electromyography is established by the physiotherapist following a musculoskeletal evaluation. It also sets the number of electrostimulation sessions and the date of the re-examination.

In the Specialized Pediatric Medical Recovery Department we are glad to have  Ruxandra Tudosoiu in our team. She is overspecialized in Schroth therapy for the treatment of scoliosis, with 7 years of experience, fully involved in recovering patients. We have Sorina Micu, a physiotherapist passionate about working and interacting with children, overspecialized in Schroth therapy, which aims to prevent or recover from disabilities due to some conditions or injuries, Anne Iordanescu , physiotherapist specializing in pediatric rehabilitation and Ana Coman, with over 3 years of experience in this field.

The department covers an area of 100 sq. meters, has ultra-modern equipment and consists of a team of specialists. Besides our 4 physiotherapists, we enjoy the presence of doctors Orlando Marinescu and Tomescu Cezar, pediatric orthopedic doctors, but also of psychologists Elena Florea and Carmen Hotar, specialists who help us in diagnosing children, in developing treatments, psychological counseling of children and parents, speech therapy and social and family integration of all children.
