Ultrasound physiotherapy
Ultrasound physiotherapy is a way of treatment that has been used by physiotherapists since the 1940s. Ultrasound therapy is performed with a device with a special conductive gel placed directly on the skin. Ultrasound accelerates the healing process of tissues, helps to relax tissues and warm tissues, and improves blood flow and healing scars.
Centrokinetic has a very performant physiotherapy equipment, by Zimmer, Soleo series.
How can ultrasound therapy help you?
Ultrasound therapy reduces local edema and chronic inflammatory processes, as well as, according to recent studies, promotes better healing of bone fractures. The intensity during therapy can be adjusted according to the desired effect. Increased intensity is usually used in cases where the goal is to heal tissue scars.
Ultrasound can also be used to achieve the effect of phonophoresis. This is a non-invasive method of administering drugs to the subcutaneous tissue, representing an improved method of administering drugs, being useful especially in patients who are afraid of conventional injections. With the help of this technique, the ultrasonic energy forces the penetration of the medication through the skin. Cortisone used to reduce inflammation, is one of the most common substances administered in this way.
The most common pathologies treated with ultrasound are soft tissue lesions such as tendonitis, chronic joint inflammatory processes, and muscle spasms. Most muscle and ligament injuries can benefit from the application of therapeutic ultrasound.
Treatment dosage
A typical ultrasound treatment will not take more than 3-5 minutes. In cases where the healing of tissue scars is desired, the treatment may take a longer period. During the session, the ultrasonic sample will move continuously. Thus, the patient will not feel any form of discomfort. Other pathologies that can be cured with ultrasound include tendonitis, chronic joint inflammatory processes, and muscle spasms.
Ultrasound waves are generated by the piezoelectric effect that originates from the crystal vibration inside the head of the ultrasonic sample. Ultrasound waves penetrate the skin into tissues, where they cause small local vibrations, especially in tissues that contain collagen. Continuous vibrations will cause a profound thermal effect, but the patient will not feel this heat. Thermal effects can cause an improvement in the extensibility of ligaments, tendons, and the joint capsule. In situations where a thermal effect is not desired, such as in recent lesions involving acute inflammatory processes, ultrasound waves can be transmitted pulsatingly and not continuously.
How does ultrasound work?
The most common pathologies that can be treated with ultrasound
Bursitis
Tendinitis
Muscle stretches and ruptures
Frozen shoulder
Sprains and ligament injuries
Joint stiffness
When should we avoid ultrasound therapy?
Contraindications to ultrasound physiotherapy include local malignancies, metal implants located in the area where the ultrasound is applied except those made of metal, active infections, vascular abnormalities, and direct application to the abdomen in pregnant women. It is also contraindicated to apply ultrasound directly to the growth cartilage, to the areas where laminectomies have been performed, or to the eyes, scalp, or testicles. When used by trained professionals, such as accredited physiotherapists, ultrasound therapy should not normally cause side effects.
